Nel 1950, alle pellicole realizzate in animazione, Disney affiancò i film interamente girati con attori. In realtà il passaggio avvenne gradualmente perché se da un lato Walt già da tempo pensava di produrre pellicole "Live action", dall'altro suo fratello Roy, che si occupava della parte economica dell'azienda, non era d'accordo. Secondo lui il film Disney non poteva chiudere l'animazione fuori dalla porta.

Della stessa idea erano le banche con il cui aiuto i Disney realizzavano i loro prodotti. Il compromesso generò alcuni film che mescolavano i generi; alcuni in modo spettacolare ("I racconti dello Zio Tom" ad esempio è un capolavoro), altri invece solo per divenire più riconoscibili dal pubblico (è il caso di "Tanto caro al mio cuore").

Finalmente libero di agire, Walt produsse "L'isola del tesoro" che pur non essendo, a onor del vero, dotato di quel senso di classico disneyano, resta insostituibile se non altro per il suo ruolo di primo in ordine di tempo. La scelta fu fatta in base ai gusti dell' epoca; il genere "cappa e spada" in quegli anni andava per la maggiore.
In seguito la Walt Disney Production si specializzò in commedie e film per la famiglia, imponendosi presto come una delle più amate case di produzione cinematografica.

Negli anni '80 il numero di pellicole prodotte prese ad aumentare notevolmente grazie a Michael Eisner che, messosi a capo dell' impero, ne ha saputo rinverdire i fasti partendo negli anni bui, quelli in cui per la Disney pareva finita.

Accostando al marchio arcinoto, (e per questo un po' legato al proprio tipo di film) la Touchstone e la Hollywood Pictures, dal 1984 Eisner ha creato centinaia di prodotti che Disney forse non avrebbe approvato ma che, non portando la sua firma, non tradiscono né la sua memoria, né il pubblico. E guadagnano milioni di dollari.

     Nel 1993, con l'ingresso della MIRAMAX, l'impero Disney θ cresciuto ulteriormente. Sul piano delle produzioni cinematografiche divenne ancora piω difficile riconoscere lo stile Disney. La Miramax si occupa anche di distribuzione, quindi la presenza del marchio non garantisce l'appartenenza di un film al catalogo produttivo della Walt Disney Company.
